Hernandez de Cordoba

In February of 1517 Cordoba was sent by Diego Velazquez, the governor of Cuba to explore the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.  Cordoba went with 3 ships and 110 men to explore Mexico, he was  the first European to encounter the Mayans.  In 1524 the governor of Darien, Pedro Arias de Avila sent Cordoba along with Francisco de Soto to explore and claim land in Nicaragua, and Cordoba started the first settlements in the area (Leon and Granada).  However, when Cordoba tried to have the land for himself, Pedro Arias de Avila killed him.
